February and March in Iowa are sometimes the coldest, windiest, snowiest and altogether most miserable months of the year here in Iowa. Temperatures can dip to single degrees and wind speeds can gust upwards of 50 miles per hour. It’s a great time of the year to stay inside and catch up on your reading because generally, spending time outside is not fun. For us, the silver lining to the months of February and March is that with the misery of the weather also brings the excitement of new life — baby calves and Rottweiler puppies!

Here is a list of some of things we have experienced in common with both our adorable puppies and calves these few months:
1. Our shelves are stacked with ear tags, puppy collars, markers, nurse replacement, tubes and record books.
2. We have started to schedule our days around cattle checks and puppy monitoring.
3. Even though you’re dog-tired (ha-ha), you can’t help but think about the next litter already!
4. Our four-wheeler, coveralls, and gloves are all covered with a familiar coat of mud.
5. Our favorite moments together are spent watching our puppies and calves thrive here on our farm.
